Redskins get set for epic NFC East battle

Published in Enzo Giovanni Blog Written by Enzo Giovanni
Redskins get set for epic NFC East battle

It's the biggest game of the millennium.

Redskins-Cowboys, NFC East Championship on the line, playoff berth on the line, winner take-all stakes, final week of the season, RG3 vs. Romo, at FedExField, NFL regular season finale, on prime-time...

Are you kidding me? It doesn't get better than this.

The Redskins last won the division in 1999. And if Redskins fans get their way, you will hear "party like it's 1999" by Prince blaring from the parking lots of FedExField late Sunday night.

But first, Washington will have the arduous task to beat Dallas and despite last week's loss to the Saints, the Cowboys are a worthy opponent especially given the recent play between Tony Romo and Dez Bryant who are clicking like never before.

That all said, the Redskins are the NFL's most dynamic offensive team. They boast the top running game in the NFL featuring a rookie tandem never seen before in the likes of Alfred Morris and one Robert Griffin III.

Offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, has proven he can adapt to a unique talent in RG3 while at the same time sticking to his "west-coast" motifs which opens things up for both the running and passing game. From standard from-center formations to the now infamous "pistol" formation, you never really know what you're going to get as a defense when facing RG3 and the Redskins.

On why opposing defense seem confused by the looks the Redskins offense give, Kyle Shanahan had this to say: "When they do take away something and you have a system that can go right to something else and you have the players in those positions that you can get them one-on-one vs. the right looks and you’ve got guys that win the majority of the time one-on-one, that’s when I think it becomes tough because you want a sound offense that has the answers."

Tony Romo and the Cowboys are known for their lack of success in December. The Redskins haven't won the division in 13 years.

One of these teams will begin a new exciting chapter for their franchise anthology while the other will be left with the agony of defeat.

Who to root for this weekend: A Redskins fan's guide for Week 14

Published in Enzo Giovanni Blog Written by Enzo Giovanni
Who to root for this weekend: A Redskins fan's guide for Week 14

The Washington Redskins - the hottest team in the NFC East and one of the most dangerous in the NFL right now - still needs a little help from the rest of the league to secure a playoff spot.

Undoubtedly, the Washington mindset is to focus on one game at a time, as they should. The Redskins will try to extend their winning streak to 4 games when they host a turf war against the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday.

And technically, even though the Redskins do not need to win this weekend, realistically (here comes the cliche...) they must win. Win, and the 'Skins are a sneeze away from the playoff picture given their fortuitous tie-breaker situation. Lose however, and then they're hoping for someone to get really sick.

But even with a victory over Baltimore this weekend, sliding into a wildcard spot or better yet, into 1st place in the NFC East, still (for the moment) depends upon what other teams do.

So lets take a look and see who Redskins nation should be rooting for this weekend in order of importance:

Assumption: The NFC North will take one of the wild card spots by either the Bears (8-4) or the Packers (8-4). Sure, the Bears could implode but lets go with that for now.

Giants (7-5) - LOSE TO SAINTS AT HOME (Sunday 4:25pm)
The Giants have lost 3 of their last 4 games, but in order to stay in the lead in the division, they will have to muster more of that December magic they're known for. Hopefully for 'Skins fans, there are no more rabbits in the hat.
Tiebreaker Situation: In favor of Redskins by virtue of division record.
Seahawks (7-5) - LOSE TO CARDINALS AT HOME (Sunday 4:25pm)
The good news is that the Seahawks helped end the referee fiasco by virtue of a botched call on Monday Night Football. Bad news is that Russell Wilson is poised like RG3. They're tough at home so maybe the football gods will even things out and screw them on a few calls this weekend.
Tiebreaker Situation: In favor of Redskins by virtue of conference record.
Cowboys (6-6) - LOSE TO BENGALS AWAY (Sunday 1pm)
Despite all the dysfunction in Jerry's world and lack of consistency week to week, the Cowboys are still very much in the playoff hunt. The bad news is you never what Cowboys team you're gonna see. The good news is you never know what Cowboys team you're gonna see.
Tiebreaker Situation: In favor of Redskins by virtue of division record (December 30th game pending).
Buccaneers (6-6) - LOSE TO EAGLES AT HOME (Sunday 1pm)
The Falcons have clinched the division so the Buccs are only fighting for a wild card right now. Coach Schiano is no joke and has his team playing tough. Can Reid and Foles finally end their 8-game losing streak?
Tiebreaker Situation: In favor of Redskins by virtue of head-to-head record.
Vikings (6-6) - LOSE TO BEARS AT HOME (Sunday 1pm)
Minnesota is the third wheel in the NFC North and are primarily looking for a wild card berth. The Bears are shaky right now however so this one's a toss up.
Tiebreaker Situation: In favor of Redskins by virtue of head-to-head record.

Redskins-Steelers storylines preview

Published in Enzo Giovanni Blog Written by Enzo Giovanni

The 3-4 Redskins will try to get back to .500 as they head to Pittsburgh this Sunday to take on the 3-3 Steelers.

A win would keep Washington very much in the post-season conversation and in the division hunt with a chance to generate some serious momentum if they handle their business the following week against the Panthers - the last game before their bye.

A loss however, would dig a 3-5 hole and setup a litany of must-win situations in order to remain relevant in the league and contenders in the NFC East.

For RG3, it will be his first game versus "Big Ben" as well as his first experience in the heart of Steeler Nation and those terrible towels.

But more important than RG's "firsts" will be how Redskins Defensive Coordinator Jim Haslett can plug the gash in the Redskins' secondary. It seems to only open up for brief moments at a time but when it does, game-ending heart-wrenching long bombs seem to gush forth like last week's Eli-to-Cruz TD that left Skins fans dumbfounded and angry.

Redskins, RG3 compete for first place in New York

Published in Enzo Giovanni Blog Written by Enzo Giovanni
Redskins, RG3 compete for first place in New York

"Electrifying!"

That was the word Redskins Radio play-by-play announcer Larry Michael used to describe Robert Griffin III during his epic run down the sidelines which essentially secured a victory over the Vikings - a very apropos word to describe someone who literally provides power surges of positively charged endorphins to the fans of burgundy and gold.

Now the show goes on the road to New York where Griffin will finally have his first experience in an NFC East Division game versus the defending champion Giants.

Griffin is already must see, must listen to. He IS the most exciting player in the NFL, but to make things more intoxicating lets add another potent ingredient to this delicious cocktail of a game: how about competing for 1st place in the division.

In a truly pivotal game, the NFC East may indeed sway with the winner of this game.

If the Giants win, they would be alone in 1st place in the division at 5-2 and begin to separate themselves from the rest.

If the Redskins win, the significance would be extraordinary. The Redskins would, at the least, share 1st place after 7 weeks of play, not 2 or 3. A rookie QB would be leading a division that already sports names like Vick, Romo, and Manning. The Giants would have 3 division losses... oh and Subway sandwiches, well they would probably be eaten more.

This isn't just a Redskins-Giants fan game. This is the game of the week in the NFL.

Kickoff Sunday @ 1:00pm
Pregame Coverage on ESPN 980 begins at 9am. Post-game coverage immediately following the game.

Griffin III named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month

Published in Enzo Giovanni Blog Written by Washington Redskins

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The National Football League announced today that Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has been named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month for September. His selection marks the second consecutive year that the Redskins have had a player earn rookie of the month honors for September, following linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, who won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month honors in September last season. Griffin III is the first Redskin to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month since offensive tackle Chris Samuels earned the honor for the month of October during the 2000 season.

Through the first four games of his professional career, Griffin III has completed 86-of-124 passes (69.4 percent) for 1,070 yards with four touchdowns and a passer rating of 103.2. Last Sunday, he became one of three players in NFL history to pass for more than 1,000 yards in the first four weeks of a rookie season, joining Carolina’s Cam Newton (2011) and Miami’s Ryan Tannehill (2012). Griffin III leads all rookies in passing yardage, completion percentage and passer rating. With 180 passing yards on Sunday, Griffin III can join Newton as only the second player in history to throw for 1,250 yards in the first five games of his rookie season.

In addition, Griffin III has rushed 41 times for 234* yards and four touchdowns, leading all quarterbacks in each category. His four rushing touchdowns are tied for most in the league with fellow Redskins rookie Alfred Morris and Houston running back Arian Foster, and the four rushing touchdowns are tied with Joe Theismann (1979) and Eddie LeBaron (1955) for the most by a quarterback in a single season in Redskins history.

*Recent scoring changes dropped Griffin III’s rushing yardage total from 252 to 234. He is now seven yards shy of breaking Sammy Baugh’s team record for rushing yards in a season by a rookie quarterback (240), set in 1937.

Only one of the five starting rookie quarterbacks survived the first week of the NFL - one Robert Griffin III. He shined in the spotlight as he led the Redskins to an upset win over the Saints.

And although it was just one game, many pundits were ready to finally speak out on Robert Griffin III.

Here are some notable quotes from the week:

John Madden (Hall of Famer)
"And at some point, I have to admit that I said this, it just came out, I said 'RG3's the best player in the NFL today.'"

Steve Mariucci (NFL Network)
He is so athletic, he is so confident he's done it in college under a different offence, he was better than expected, I think we have another superstar in the making in this league."

Jerry Jones (Owner of the Dallas Cowboys)
"He certainly showed a lot of poise. They had him game-planned really well to do the kinds of things that he does good. His athletic ability, his speed, all of that is something that I don't look forward to the Cowboys competing against for a lot of years."

Skip Bayless (ESPN)
"I am on record as saying RG3 will be better, eventually, than Andrew Luck."

Stephen A. Smith (ESPN)
When you look at RG3 and his talent, I mean this dude is big time. He's got a lot of potential. He's got the arm strength, he's got the accuracy, he's got the ability to actually throw the football and we know he's got some wheels on him.

Rick Reilly (ESPN)
"Griffin is something of an action superhero himself after exactly one game in the NFL. What else would you call a rookie who went into the bleeding-ear Superdome and shocked the New Orleans Saints, 40-32, to become the first QB in NFL history to be named Player of the Week in his first game as a pro? If he's not a superhero, then why are they selling Robert Griffin capes?"

Matt Williamson (ESPN)
"Griffin executed his portion of the game plan to perfection, with the ball rarely touching the carpet in New Orleans. But as the game went along, Griffin tried and completed more difficult throws. He has a fantastic arm and a quick release, so he is just at the tip of the iceberg in terms of what he could become as a passer."

Steve Young (NFL Network)
"Obviuously this guy is a special football player. That's what's unique about it. Everyone is desperate in the league to have a qb to have someone who is top line who can actually get elite. There is only 4 or 5 elite players in the league today and those 4 or 5 players get to go to the playoffs for the superbowl every year. Everyone else is just kinda standing around watching them go like a parade. And all of a sudden the Washington Redskins can be in that parade? That's pretty cool."

RG3 leads Redskins to spectacular win in New Orleans

Published in Enzo Giovanni Blog Written by Enzo Giovanni

The Redskins shocked the Saints, winning 40-32 in the most hostile environment in the NFL.

The Saints were undefeated (8-0) at home last season as they broke all-time NFL records for offense. The most points the Redskins scored last season was 28. The Saints had a million reasons to unleash an entire offseason of frustration upon their first week opponent. The Redskins were starting a rookie quarterback.

There was a reason the odds makers had Saints favored by 9.5 points, the second highest point spread of the weekend.

Yet as the game played out, two things became very clear. Robert Griffin III, despite his rookie status, is indeed a special talent and a force to be reckoned with this season, and secondly, Mike Shanahan knows how to use him. Of the 5 rookie quarterbacks starting in week one, only Griffin III won his game. Griffin was also the only rookie QB who didn't throw an interception, but he did better than that. Griffin III out performed every other QB in the NFL as he posted the highest QB rating on Sunday - the result of a 19/26 performance for 320 yards including 2 TD and no interceptions.

The Redskins game plan was brilliant. Griffin got comfortable and acclimated to the game early, as the first series script of play calls included a bunch of bubble screens and quick QB runs that kept the Saints guessing. Even though the Saints knew RG3 would be featured in option and pistol formations, they still looked surprised and had no grip on how to handle him. In short, the Saints interim assembly of coaches in shuffled roles were no match for Mike Shanahan and company. In fact, it was Shanahan's third consecutive regular season opener for the Redskins and he is now 15-4 all-time in season openers, the most for any active coach in the NFL. Clearly, if he has time to prepare, he's very good.

The Redskins needed more than a great game plan and a hot QB to win the game though. WR Pierre Garcon's run after the catch on his TD was spectacular and the reason why the Redskins signed him in free agency. Defensively, the Redskins forced Brees into repeated three-and-outs, pressuring him constantly, and tallying a sack and interception. Redskins kicker Billy Cundiff was 4/4 on field goals including two for 40+. And while the Saints may have still scored 32 points, two of those touchdowns occurred on 4th downs, and included a 2-point conversion. The Saints scrapped as much as they could for their 32 points. The Redskins seemed to coast for 40.

The RG3 era began with a bang that suprisingly eclipsed the hype surrounding him as the NFC East just became really interesting.

The changing of the guard: Griffin, Garcon, Davis, and Morris

Published in Enzo Giovanni Blog Written by Enzo Giovanni
The changing of the guard: Griffin, Garcon, Davis, and Morris

The names are certainly changing around Redskins Park these days.

Redskins Fan favorite and all-time franchise leader for receptions by a tight end (428) Chris Cooley was released yesterday. Fan favorite and 2nd in in all-time rushing yards (6,824) Clinton Portis finally officially retired last week.

In fact, in the four primary point producing positions: quarterback, wide receiver, tight end, and running back, the Redskins have a new quartet of faces - threel new to the franchise this year.

The new guard

Robert Griffin III - We all know about him of course, the rookie quarterback who doesn't talk or play like one and poised to be the franchise quarterback everybody wants him to be.

Pierre Garcon - The biggest pickup of the offseason in free agency, a proven commidity who honed his skills with one of the greats Peyton Manning. Garcon has been a frequent target of Griffin so far in preseason and looks primed and eager to relish the role of #1 receiver this season for the Redskins.

Fred Davis - Recently voted the offensive player of the 2011 year (despite his suspension) at the Redskins annual Welcome Home Luncheon, Davis is considered by many to be a Top 10 tight end talent. This season Davis will strive to cement himself as a true undisputed top tight end in the NFL.

Alfred Morris - That's right, 6th round draftee and rookie running back Alfred Morris is the fourth face on Mount Rushmore for Redskins' optimists. With Helu, Hightower, and Royster all dealing with injuries and rehab, Morris has taken advantage of the opportunity. Morris turns 2 yard stops into four yard gains. He falls forward. He bounces and spins. He used to be a linebacker and its apparent. It's too early to call right now, but Alfred Morris may be that late round nugget that the Redskins were looking for - and don't be surprised to see him as the starter for the beginning of the season as the other guys figure it out.

Andrew Luck vs. Robert Griffin III

Published in Enzo Giovanni Blog Written by Enzo Giovanni
Andrew Luck vs. Robert Griffin III

Yes, yes, it's the Colts vs. Redskins, but we all know that most people will be focused on the rookie QB matchup that features the #1 and #2 picks of this year's NFL Draft.

Kudos to the NFL for getting something right this offseason ;)

So far in preseason it's Andrew Luck, however, that's been given the license to let the pigskin fly, having already thrown 41 passes with 26 completions.

Compare that to Robert Griffin III, who has only thrown 14 total passes in his two games (9 completions).

That said, given the nature of the 3rd week of NFL preseason, fans should get a healthy dose of Luck vs. RG3 in tomorrow's game which will be RG's home debut at FedExField.

The question many fans are asking is how much of the playbook will RG III get to play with? Will the home town crowd get to see him throw deep? Or will Shanahan save the big show for New Orleans???

The answer arrives tomorrow at the 4pm kickoff. Redskins Radio pregame coverage begins at NOON.

Griffin to Garcon impressive in Redskins preseason opener

Published in Enzo Giovanni Blog Written by Enzo Giovanni
Robert Griffin III throws to Pierre Garcon for his first-ever TD

So far so good.

Robert Griffin III and Pierre Garcon, the Washington Redskins' two biggest acquisitions of the offseason, connected three times including a 20 yd touchdown - a combination that we may see a lot more of during the regular season.

Griffin III was 4/6 for 70 yds and a TD, but all of his passes were on target. The two incompletes, one intended for Niles Paul and one for Garcon, both looked like they should have been retained.

The only real glitch in the rookie QB's performance was a lost fumble on a 3rd down during a handoff to Evan Royster, but who's fault that was is debatable.

And although it was just a preseason game, the poise that Robert Griffin III has demonstrated so far in the offseason and training camp, off the field, and with the media seemed to transfer to the field as well. Between baiting the defense into an offsides, on time and on target passing, and a ballerna-esque cutback to avoid a potential sack, Robert Griffin III looked comfortable and in command.

Perhaps most impressively, Griffin III's jersey stayed clean as the combination of a quick release, offensive line protection, and play calling seemed in sync.

Ironically, one of the well-known and often-talked-about talents of RG III, his speed and ability to run, wasn't needed or shown last night. All we saw was pure quarterback play and most fans are probably content with with that.

It was just a preseason game, but you can still almost hear a collective sigh of relief in Washington as Griffin III seemed to play 'as advertised'.
