Playing the Must Win Card
It is hard to believe that in Week 9 the Redskins are facing a must win with the Carolina Panthers in town. Coach Mike Shanahan said on Monday that this is a "must win" and has not backed off those feelings.
It is always interesting when coaches play the must win card. No matter what takes place this weekend the Redskins still have 7 more games to play. The meaning will take a big drop if the Skins come up short at home against the one win Panthers
However, a win followed by the bye and a struggling Eagles team at home would give the Redskins some life. A loss and a bye well...it would lead to a real long two weeks.
So how should the players react to the head coaches declaration? My two radio partners and former Redskins Doc Walker and Brian Mitchell summed it up for me on the radio this week "Inside the Locker Room" saying it should add even more urgency for the players especially with the bye in front of them.
They explained coaches can make the bye week's miserable if they want to make guys show up for work every few days and not allowing them several consecutive days off.
The Panthers will be plenty motivated too with just one win and plenty of close losses lately. It is on the Redskins to take away the Panthers will early and get a much needed win.
The Skins outlook over the last seven games will look much brighter if they are 4-5 rather than 3-6.
